Buzz buzz

Things are buzzing around here. My writing schedule for the next year is falling into place. My five year old is about to become a six year old and we’re already talking a lot about first grade, which starts in a month. And I’m getting pretty excited about Infinity Key– which is, alas, still about four months away. Well, slightly less than four months.

I haven’t yet set up a countdown yet on my phone, but I’ve considered it.

And it’s silly, honestly. An indie book’s launch date isn’t very meaningful. The first reviews solicited by the publisher appear before then. Those readers who are excited enough to pick it up launch day aren’t actually going to read it then so I won’t know what my *~favorite people~* think that day. I may or may not have  a blog tour date on the same day. It’s just such a silly milestone to be anticipating.

Then again, my five year old is pretty excited about his sixth birthday too. Of course, he’s getting gifts…

I’m going to be making him a cake. This cake or maybe this one. He’s a big fan of planets and of videos and of decorated cakes, so I’m documenting the process and the video as much as the cake itself will be one of my presents for him. No, I don’t have much experience with cake decorating but we did play with fondant some for last year’s cake! Which, alas, I’m not finding any pictures of. But anyhow, I’m pretty adventurous in the kitchen, or at least not easily intimidated. What’s the worst that can happen?

Anyhow, cake! Milestones! Schedules!

I’m looking into adding some Project Wonderful ads discreetly to the blog. Possibly only on the Nightlights story pages.  I want to keep it free-to-read-on-web but the webhosting isn’t free, y’know? I’d originally hoped to have it be crowdfunded, with some Paypal donations and so on. Alas, I am not very good at soliciting those. Or maybe the button on the sidebar doesn’t even work! I have no idea. But, y’know, Project Wonderful. They’re pretty cool.

I’m supposed to be sleeping right now. And if not sleeping, working on my novel. 🙂 I think a blog post is pretty close, though, don’t you?

  1. I think a book launch date is something worth being excited about! (Hey, *I’ve* never had one.) Maybe you should get presents for that, too. And cake.

Those cakes you linked just blew me away. I’m known for making special cakes for my son’s birthday, but never to that extreme. This year, he had a solar system cake, with a plain round cake for the sun, cupcakes for the planets, and mini cupcakes for the dwarf planets — all frosted in appropriate colors, of course. I also used Milk Duds and Whoppers to represent the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. I certainly didn’t hand-paint fondant, though, and my I doff my hat to you if you go that route!

    1. My plan is to make my husband, who has some experience carving and painting miniature wargaming scenery out of foamboard, do that step. 😉 We’ll see how it works out.
